How does Tapping make such rapid changes in emotions, inner programming and outer behaviours?  

Tapping calms the amygdala, an almond shaped group of nuclei in your brain that govern the fight or flight response in the body.   When you tap the series of acupressure points shown on a Tapping chart, the Amygdala is calmed.  Tapping does not require you to ‘believe’ in it.  Tapping provides a calming of the amygdala within your brain, and the processes it governs within your brain and body.  How do we know this?


Clinical studies at Harvard show acupuncture calms the amygdala function. Stimulating meridian acupoints decreased activity in the amygdala and parts of the brain associated with negative emotions. PET and fMRI shows the amygdala’s alarms being calmed when acupoints are stimulated.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging or functional MRI (fMRI) is a functional neuroimaging procedure using MRI technology that measures brain activity by detecting associated changes in blood flow.  Harvard’s study focused on using needles on acupressure points.  However, studies confirm the beneficial and reliable impacts when acupressure points are stimulated without needles.

The amygdala is the part of your brain’s sensory system which detects danger.  When you stimulate acupressure points the amygdala receives and passes on to your fight or flight centre the message that you are safe right now.

Memories of situations which were previously upsetting/alarming to you (which previously triggered your body’s natural fight or flight response whenever you thought about those details) become calmed. This calming happens through Tapping’s calming interaction with the amygdala. You don’t forget what happened.  But when you do think of what happened, you no longer feel overwhelmed, or physically impacted by that memory.

You actually are reconditioning your brain to process the information differently.  The signal of safety sent by your fingertip to your brain, through the amygdala, tells your body’s stress machinery to disengage.  The previously ‘conditioned’ stress response becomes broken… and once a loop is broken it usually stays broken. 

Tapping can also help in dealing with currently and on-going stressful situations, like being under financial duress, or the illness of a loved one.


The Amygdala has important functions governing your bodys’ responses to fear and negative emotions. The information below (from a paper on Neuroanatomy from The University of Iowa) shows what the Amygdala functions are within the brain and body.

"The Amygdala is an almond shaped mass of nuclei located deep within the temporal lobe of the brain. It is a limbic system structure that is involved in many of our emotions and motivations, particularly those that are related to survival. The amygdala is involved in the processing of emotions such as fear, anger and pleasure. The amygdala is also responsible for determining what memories are stored and where the memories are stored in the brain. It is thought that this determination (of how/where memories are stored) is based on how huge an emotional response, any event (or memory) invokes.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Within the paper on Neuroanatomy is a detailed list of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms, including causes, incidences and risk factors.  The Arousal section of information regarding PTSD includes the following symptoms:   (Arousal is governed by the Amygdala)

How powerfully and co-operatively can EFT's meridian tapping work within the human body?

Calming the Amygdala (and all the functional areas which the Amygdala governs) give us access to rapidly calming the stress response in our bodies, which can directly offer an improvement to health and wellness.   We can calm the body’s arousal symptoms, emotional responses, intensity of memories, and reduce or eliminate physical issues caused by the fight or flight system’s ability to hi-jack other body systems, when fight or flight is triggered.

Clinical studies show pain reduced by 68%,  stress reduced by 25%, and positive effects for weight loss; and importantly, PTSD was shown to be reduced… 89% of the participants of the study resolved PTSD in as few as 6 sessions.

Dr. George Pratt (being interviewed on Larry King live and on San Diego television stations) speaks about the calming effect meridian tapping has on the Amygdala, and how the emotional impact of events can be reduced much more rapidly with meridian tapping’s acupressure techniques than by talk therapy alone.  Dr. Pratt also says although this is not always the case, he has seen the resolution of serious issues such as PTSD being reduced to 2 or 3 private sessions.

In fact, it's EFT's ability to access the amygdala, an almond-shaped part of your brain that initiates your body's negative reaction to fear (a process we often refer to as the "fight or flight" response) that makes it so powerful.  "By reducing stress," adds Church, "EFT helps with many problems.  There's a stress component to sports performance, business and financial pressure, and most disease.  When you reduce stress in one area of your life, there's often a beneficial effect in other areas."

Church estimates that 10 million people worldwide have used tapping, and what's so exciting is how incredibly quickly it's alleviating issues like depression, anxiety and insomnia, as well severe PTSD, physical pain, even illness.

In partnership with Dr. David Feinstein, Dr. Church has been able to confirm that tapping on specific meridian points has a positive effect on reducing cortisol levels.  Cortisol, known as the "stress hormone," is integral to our body's "fight or flight" response.  Originally designed to help us survive life in the wild, the "fight or flight" response was essential when our ancient ancestors were faced with sudden, brief danger like, let's say, a saber-tooth tiger.  However useful in short bursts, releasing cortisol too frequently, as we seem to be doing in response to the ongoing or "chronic" stress of modern life, may have serious, even scary, impacts on our physical, mental and emotional health.  In fact, living in this kind of biological "survival mode" may be making us more vulnerable to everything from cancer to heart disease, and more.
